About the card

TMSL’s first venture was to bring a contactless smart card named Filao.
Filao Card is the future of payment in the transport system. It is also the successor of the magnetic card, with a larger storage capacity.
This bigger storage makes the card more versatile as it can be used for other payments and as an attendance card in the workplace.

How it works

Step 1

Collect your Filao card at Victoria and Rose-Hill bus terminal.

Step 2

Top-up your filao card at Rose Hill, Port Louis, Emanuel Anquetil, Coromandel, Beau Bassin and Stanley post office.

Step 3

Get in the bus and tap in your card.

Step 4

Tap out your card as you are getting off the bus.

Frequently Asked Questions

We want our passengers the best possible value when you travel. So, here is a few tips to help our passengers to travel smart.

A filao card is a smartcard (contains a built-in microchip with your payment information) with a pay as you go credit that allows you to travel on all RHT buses only. Pay as you fares with a filao card are cheaper than buying single paper tickets. You won’t have to queue to buy a ticket. Plus you can enjoy special offers and discounts.
A filao card can be purchased instantly at the card sale booths at Rose Hill Station and Port Louis Victoria Station.
The passenger must either fill in a form at the station booth whereby the main requirement if the National Identity card No for identification or the form can be filled online under the register section.
A deposit of Rs50 is required for the filao card and the top up amount (Rs100, Rs200, Rs500, Rs1000 and Rs1500).

You can apply for a cash refund if your card is lost, stolen or damaged but you cannot withdraw the money from the filao card.
The card is valid for 2 years as from the date of encoding, however the card can be renewed for free when it is expired.
I can make a request to have a transaction statement by calling on the hotline 8001900 or 4640041. The concerned personnel will revert back to you and the statement can be either emailed or collected at the card sales booths.
Make sure you always tap in and tap out your card at the card reader which is at the entrance and exit of the buses to ensure that you paid the correct fare.
  1. For 1 door buses: tap in and tap out at the front card reader
  2. For 2 door buses: tap in at the front card reader and tap out at rear door card reader.
You may be liable to a penalty fare if you fail to tap in and the maximum fare will be deducted on tapping out.
  1. Correct tap in and out: light changes to green and you hear a beep.
  2. Tap in or tap out is declined: light changes to red and you can hear a loud beep.
  1. Check whether the card reader indicates insufficient fund, if yes, please pay by cash and top up your card at the designated point of sales.
  2. If you believe you have a valid filao card for your journey, you will need to contact our hotline on 8001900 as the station staff cannot access your personal account card details.
You can see the amount on your card at each tap on the card reader on board buses and at the card reader at Rose Hill and Port Louis bus stand.
Not tapping in is considered as a fraud and inspectors will be deducting the maximum fare twice as a penalty. When I will be tapping out, it will deduce the maximum fare for this particular route.
I will be charged a maximum fare as tapping out would have indicated the system where I alighted for it to charge me the right amount.
If the remaining value on the card is positive (eg Rs1 or above) but insufficient to cover the payment of a particular transaction, the filao card can still be used provided the resulting negative value does not exceed Rs50. The filao card cannot be used if the remaining value is zero or negative prior to the transaction.
You are advised to call on our hotline 8001900 or 4640041 to report same.
If the chip in the card is broken, a new card can be given against payment of a RS50 fee and the remaining credit on the broken card will be transferred to the new one. Please call the hotline on 8001900 or 4640041 for transfer of fund onto the new card.
Incomplete transaction may occur when a filao card is removed too quickly from the reader or when more than one filao is simultaneously presented to the same reader. When it happens, the validator will reminder you to tap card again, incomplete transaction will not deduct money from the filao card.
